Dr. John J. Carey is a consultant physician in Rheumatology and Medicine at Galway University Hospitals, and Associate Professor in Medicine, National University of Ireland, Galway. Following his undergraduate training at University College Dublin Medical School, Ireland, Dr. Carey completed his post-graduate training in Medicine and Rheumatology at Boston University Medical Centre, The Cleveland Clinic and Case Western University, USA. During his time in the USA he also worked as a consultant physician in internal medicine on Cape Cod, MA for 5 years where he was voted number 1 doctor and number 1 doctors office before his departure to The Cleveland Clinic.
He is currently the rheumatology lead for the Saolta Hospital Group, Ireland where he practices medicine and rheumatology. In addition he oversees the fracture liaison programmes and the DXA service at Galway University Hospitals, and telehealth rheumatology programmes. His research interests focuses on observational studies in imaging, bone and arthritis. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and 5 book chapters.
Dr. Carey is the president of the board for the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) and chair of the Local Organising Committee for annual ISCD courses in Ireland since 2009. He was recently appointed to the Committee of Scientific Advisors for the International Osteoporosis Society.
