Hugh Tildesley, MD

Dr. Hugh Tildesley is a provincial and national leader in the field of diabetes. He is currently a clinical professor in the department of medicine, division of endocrinology at the University of British Columbia at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.

Dr. Tildesley obtained his medical degree at McGill University and his internal medicine and endocrinology fellowship at the University of Alberta. While at the University of Alberta, his research was mentored by Drs. George Molnar, Tony Morrison, Bill McBlain and Peter Crockford .

In 1984 Dr. Tildesley joined St. Paul's Hospital and the University of British Columbia. He founded the Diabetes Teaching and Training Center, which offers comprehensive diabetes education in a group setting. The database which was set up at the same time allows for ongoing outcome evaluations to assess effectiveness of the program and to facilitate clinical research. The clinic was also designed to be a teaching module for diabetes care for undergraduate and post-graduate trainees.

In 1988, along with Dr. John Hunt, Dr. Tildesley was instrumental in convincing the Provincial Government to fund test strips as a pharmacare benefit. This benefit was the first to be linked to a diabetes education requirement. This initiative helped to stimulate the growth of diabetes centers in BC. Over the next five years the number of centers tripled. It also led to a certification process for teaching centers incorporating CDA standards. Coupled with this was the establishment of the annual Diabetes Directors meeting , an educational program for the medical directors of these centers which has continued for the last 22 years.

Dr. Tildesley has initiated a number clinics, including the fellows clinic at St. Paul's and the endocrine clinic at Kelowna General Hospital. In addition, he was the medical director of the children's diabetes camp and helped with integration with the YMCA Camp at Elphinstone.

In 2007, he founded the Western Canadian Insulin Pump Center to ease access for patients desiring this form of therapy. The clinic was involved in a recently completed study on the effectiveness of sensor augmented pump therapy in type 1 diabetes, and is also applying internet platforms to follow patients remotely.

Dr. Tildesley has published extensively on many topics in diabetes including: self monitoring of blood glucose, microalbuminuria, diabetes education, diabetes in the elderly, insulin pumps, and gestational diabetes. He is an active researcher and has received a number of grants in the field of diabetes and its complications.
