Helen Mayberg, MD
Helen Mayberg, MD

Dr. Helen Mayberg is a professor of psychiatry and neurology at Emory University School of Medicine. A fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, she is also affiliated with the University of Toronto.

In 2002, Dr. Mayberg was awarded the Distinguished Investigator Award by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. Her research focuses on the characterization of neural systems mediating mood and emotions in health and disease using functional neuroimaging. The primary goal is to define brain mechanisms underlying major depression, with an emphasis on development of algorithms that will distinguish patient subgroups, optimize treatment selection, and provide markers of disease vulnerability. This work has led to the first pilot study of deep brain stimulation, a reversible method of selective modulation of a specific brain circuit, for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Dr. Mayberg earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California, and completed her residency training in neurology at Columbia University's Neurological Institute in New York City. She then finished her research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
