Gary A. Richwald, MD, MPH has been licensed as a physician in California since 1976 and is a practicing internist and communicable disease expert. He received his engineering degree from Cornell University, his medical degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and his Masters in Public Health at UCLA. Dr. Richwald completed his training in internal medicine, preventive medicine (communicable diseases), and geriatrics at the University of Michigan, UCLA Medical Center, and the VA Wadsworth Medical Center, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at UCLA. Dr. Richwald was Director and Chief Physician of the Los Angeles County STD Program for twelve years from 1989 to 2000. Prior to this, he was a full-time member of the UCLA faculty and currently lectures at USC School of Medicine on HSV and HPV infections (Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases graduate course). For the past 5 years, he has served as Medical Director and Chief Scientific Officer of myLAB Box. myLAB Box is the first nationwide consumer platform offering home-collection of STI and women’s health tests, specimen mail-in to the laboratory, private user portal to view test results, and telehealth services for counseling, treatment (where appropriate and available), and referral. Dr. Richwald has served as consultant to the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA) on viral STDs and to the CDC on STD treatment guidelines, Co-chair, AMA Consensus Development Group on External Genital Warts and HPV infection, Chair, California STD Control Association (3 terms), founding member, National Coalition of STD Directors, and lecturer/consultant for GSK, Novartis, Merck and 3M Pharmaceuticals. He is currently Medical Advisor, LA and Orange County HELP Groups (herpes and HPV support groups) and a member of the Infectious Disease Association of California (IDAC) and the American STD Association (ASTDA). Dr. Richwald is the author of publications in the area of STD and viral disease diagnosis and treatment, HIV/STD prevention, HPV and HSV infections, evaluation of contraceptive methods, and the impact of immigration policy on communicable diseases. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The People Concern (formerly OPCC and LAMP Community), Maternal Child Health Access, and the Children’s Advocacy Institute (CAI) at the University of San Diego School of Law.
