Fitzhugh Mullan, MD
    Dr. Mullan, a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Chicago Medical School, is board-certified in pediatrics. During more than 20 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, he served as a National Health Service Corps physician in New Mexico, the Director of the National Health Service Corps, the Director of the Bureau of Health Professions, and from 1990 to 1995, as an Assistant Surgeon General. He has also been the Secretary of Health and Environment for the State of New Mexico, a member of the Council on Graduate Medical Education, and a member of the President’s Task Force on Healthcare Reform. Dr. Mullan has written extensively for professional and general audiences. His books include Big Doctoring in America: Profiles in Primary Care (University of California Press, 2002), Plagues and Politics: The Story of the United States Public Health Service (Basic Books, 1989), Vital Signs: A Young Doctor’s Struggle with Cancer (Farrar Straus & Giroux, 1983), and White Coat, Clenched Fist: The Political Education of An American Physician (Macmillan, 1976). Dr. Mullan’s research interests focus on healthcare workforce policy, including medical and nursing education, physician migration and global workforce capacity development. He served as chair of the recent Institute of Medicine study on the mobilization of U.S. health professionals for work in high-impact HIV nations. He is the lead editor of the study’s report, titled “Healers Abroad: Americans Responding to the Human Resource Crisis in HIV/AIDS” (The National Academy of Sciences Press, 2005). Dr. Mullan is the Founding Chair of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Health Museum. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the United States Public Health Service, the Surgeon General’s Medallion, and the 1988 Am of the Insterican Cancer Society Courage Award.
