Emeran Mayer, MD, PhD
Emeran Mayer, MD, PhD

    Dr. Emeran Mayer is a professor in the departments of medicine, physiology, psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and director of the Center for Neurovisceral Sciences & Women's Health within the UCLA's division of digestive diseases, a translational research program which has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and is currently viewed as the world's leading integrated research program in the area of functional digestive disorders. Research efforts of this program have centered on epidemiological studies in populations suffering from chronic gastrointestinal disorders. Dr. Mayer is also the founding chair of the UCLA Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine, a multidisciplinary and interdepartmental clinical and research program investigating many aspects of integrative and mind-body medicine.

    Board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Mayer has a longstanding interest in clinical and neurobiology aspects of brain-gut interactions in health and disease. He has published more than 110 original articles, numerous review articles and chapters, and co-edited two books. He has also served on the editorial boards of the leading journals in digestive diseases, including Gastroenterology, Gut, Digestion, and the American Journal of Physiology. Dr. Mayer has made seminal contributions to the characterization of physiologic alterations in patients with functional disorders, particularly in visceral pain; stress-induced visceral hyperalgesia; and altered brain responses. More recently, he has assumed an interest in probiotic therapies for gastroenterological disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome.

    Dr. Mayer earned his medical degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universitat in Munich, Germany. He finished his residency at Vancouver General Hospital, and subsequently completed a fellowship in gastroenterology within the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
