Eelco Wijdicks, MD, PhD
Eelco Wijdicks, MD, PhD

    Dr. Eelco Wijdicks is professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and chair of the division of critical care neurology since 2003, and a consultant in the neurological neurosurgical intensive care unit of Saint Marys Hospital at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was educated in the Netherlands, earning his MD from Leiden University, completing his residency and PhD at Erasmus Universit, and going on to be an attending neurologist at University Medical Center Utrecht. He later was a visiting scientist and research fellow at neurologic-neurosurgical intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and joined the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, department of neurology in 1992.

    Dr. Wijdicks is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the founding editor-in-chief of Neurocritical Care. Dr. Wijdicks has authored over 500 research papers, book chapters and editorials. He is the author of the American Academy of Neurology's guidelines on prediction of poor outcome in comatose survivors after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (2006) and brain death (2010).

    He has authored and edited 10 books with Oxford University Press. He has most recently authored four books: The Comatose Patient (Honorable Mention book award by the American Medical Writers Association, 2009); Neurologic Complications of Critical Illness, Third Edition; and The Practice of Emergency; and Critical Care Neurology; he is also the author of a new and expanded edition of his book Brain Death (second edition).
