Darrel Regier, MD

    Dr. Darrel Regier for the last decade has been executive director of the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education and director, division of research, at the American Psychiatric Association. The institute is an independent nonprofit research component of the APA with its own board and research mission in mental health services, health policy, epidemiology, and psychopathology research and related training. Its principle responsibility has been to coordinate the maintenance and revision for the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.

    Prior to this, Dr. Regier worked for 25 years at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), directing three research divisions in the areas of epidemiology, prevention, ceinical research and health services research. He has been an author, reviewer and editorial/scientific advisory board member of many professional journals and has published over 150 articles, book chapters, and monographs. Following his service to the NIMH, Dr. Regier retired as a Rear Admiral and Assistant Surgeon General in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service.

    Dr. Regier received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. Following a psychiatry residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, he completed research training at the Harvard School of Public Health.
