Anthony Alessi, MD
Anthony Alessi, MD

    Dr. Anthony G. Alessi is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a board-certified neurologist in private practice specializing in general neurology, neuromuscular diseases, EMG and sports medicine. He is an associate clinical professor of neurology at the University of Connecticut and serves as stroke program director for the Backus Hospital Primary Stroke Center in Norwich, Connecticut.

    Dr. Alessi has been involved in sports medicine since 1995, when he became a neurologic consultant to the New York Yankees.  In 1997, he was named to the consulting staff for the University of Connecticut Athletic Department, where he remains active. He has served as a neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Defenders (double A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants), and currently consults for the Connecticut Sun WNBA basketball team, and is frequently asked to evaluate individual athletes.

    Dr. Alessi became involved in the sport of boxing in 1997, when he was appointed ringside physician for the Connecticut State Boxing Commission as well as the athletic commissions of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. Since his appointments, he has worked to improve safety in the sport of boxing.  He can often be found at ringside, where he is a resource to referees when decisions regarding the continuation of boxing contests must be made. In 2009, the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians named him Ringside Physician of the Year for his work in improving the safety of the sport of boxing.

    Dr. Alessi's weekly column, podcast and blog, "Healthy Sports," appears in the Norwich Bulletin and is syndicated to Gate House Publishing affiliates. He is the author of the book Healthy Sports: A Doctor's Lessons for a Winning Lifestyle, and also hosts "Healthy Rounds with Dr. Anthony Alessi," a weekly syndicated radio talk show on WTIC News Talk 1080 AM, the Hartford, Connecticut, CBS affiliate.

    Dr. Alessi's neurology residency and fellowship were completed at the University of Michigan. He also holds a masters degree in medical management from the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University.
