Dr. Allen Z. Verne attended Hobart College in Upstate New York, before earning his medical degree at New York Medical College. He completed his ophthalmology training St. Lukes Hospital Center in New York City and his retina training at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Dr. Verne has a special interest in complicated traumatic problems as well as diabetic retinopathy. He is head of the retina service at Highland Hospital and founder of the Bay Area Retina Associates in northern California. He has previously served as chief of ophthalmology at California's John Muir Hospital and at LBJ Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago, American Samoa. Dr. Verne is an assistant clinical professor and consultant at California Pacific Medical Center.

Dr. Verne is also a founder and past president of the Vitreous Society, now known as the American Society of Retina Specialists, and president of the American Retina Foundation. Dr. Verne is a member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the French Ophthalmology Society.
