Underserved PAH Populations: Why Don’t We Connect?

  • Overview

    Many pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients remain undiscovered, undiagnosed, and underserved. The reasons for this are many-fold, but central to the treatment of these patients is a need to make PAH care more accessible, affordable, and attractive. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the need to connect with not only undiscovered PAH patients, but even those currently under physician care. That’s why this program explores myriad aspects of finding means to discover, connect with, and manage the disease of these underserved PAH patients in our general population. Key explorations brought to light in the program include the burdens many patients and physicians face with the financial costs to care, the prejudices many experience or perceive, and the lack of education and awareness of patients and healthcare providers alike. Part of the solution to these modern-day issues centers on the education of physicians, reducing medical and ancillary costs to patients, and making the most of the developing practices of telemedicine.

  • Target Audience

    This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with pulmonary hypertension.

  • Learning Objectives

    After participating in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

    • Define the underserved PAH population and the socioeconomic determinants of care and access to care
    • Examine the use of remote monitoring and patient evaluation technologies and strategies
    • Discuss potential solutions to maintaining access of PAH patients to specialty care
    • Discuss barriers to PAH patient identification and care that reside within current health care systems

    In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) and TotalCME, Inc. GLC is jointly accredited by the American Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
